Library Assistant 3 - Library Associate I Job Description

GRADE:  4

POSITION TITLE: Library Assistant III OR Library Associate I – Part Time

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT STATUS:    Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Youth Services Manager or Central Library Manager


HOURS & DAYS OF DUTY:  Part time, 29 hours per week.  Regular schedule includes evening, daytime and rotating Saturday schedule.

PRINCIPLE PURPOSE OF JOB:   To courteously, professionally and efficiently provide helpful, accurate service to customers.

JOB STANDARDS:  
  1. Promotes and maintains the library’s service philosophy.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge of established library policies and procedures and the ability to enforce them, referring unusual situations to supervisor or administration. 
  3. Maintains confidentiality according to library policy.
  4. Regularly and punctually reports to assigned location.
  5. Demonstrates neatness, accuracy, thoroughness, and general effectiveness of work produced.
  6. Demonstrates personal responsibility for learning and growth through participating in training programs and workshops in line with agreed upon learning plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists customers at all customer service points at all library locations.
  2. Provides reference and referral services.
  3. Assists with collection development, shelving, shelf reading and weeding.
  4. Acting responsible party in absence of the Branch Manager.
  5. Assists and provides instruction to customers with computers, electronic devices, and other equipment.
  6. Assists with community outreach events and outreach programming.
  7. Assists with in-house programming for youth and adults.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

  2. Able to function as a lead worker and provide guidance and/or training to other staff members.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college OR equivalent work experience in customer service and/or education field

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

Library Associates required to meet state requirement of approved training.
Maryland Class "C" driver's license or an equivalent from another state.


DESIRABLE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Library experience.  
  • Experience using 3-D printers, VR and similar technologies.


PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
•    Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time.
•    Requires reaching, bending, and carrying light to moderate loads up to 20 lbs.
•    Requires ability to move about library to help customers.
•    Requires ability to operate a keyboard and view a computer monitor.
•    Requires ability to communicate using a telephone.
•    Requires ability to push/pull a rolling book carts.
•    Work is conducted in a normal office setting which provides comfortable lighting, temperature and air conditioning.
•    Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g. use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.
