eBooks FAQs

Do I need anything to get started checking out eBooks?

You must have a Maryland library card with a PIN and a supported device. If you don’t know your PIN, please call or visit the library.

Do I have to have a Kindle or Nook to read eBooks?

No. There are free apps for home computers, Apple, and Android devices.

How many eBooks can I check out at once?

There is a limit of 6 titles - including audiobooks and ebooks - at a time. You can also place up to 6 titles on hold.

How long can I keep eBooks?

At checkout, you can select a lending period of 7, 14, or 21 days. You can also return items early. Check each device’s instructions for more details.

eBooks are digital. Why can’t the library lend them to as many people as they want?

Due to publisher licensing agreements, most titles in the OverDrive collection are restricted to “one copy, one user.” There are exceptions under the “Always Available” link.

Why don’t you have more new books available as eBooks?

Each publisher determines which titles will be released as digital books. Due to concerns relating to digital rights management, some publishers release their titles only in print format.
